Dr. Remo Panaccione
University of Calgary​

Dr. Panaccione is a Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Unit at the University of Calgary. He holds the Crohn’s Colitis Canada Endowed Research Chair in IBD and serves as the Dean of MD Admissions and Director of the IBD Fellowship Program. Dr. Panaccione is recognized as a leading authority on IBD therapeutics and has co-authored numerous clinical guidelines for the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology. His commitment to advancing IBD research and education has earned him significant recognition, including the 2020 Crohn’s Colitis Canada Outstanding Physician of the Year award.

With over 375 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Panaccione is an internationally recognized researcher in the field of IBD. He has co-authored 9 book chapters and over 700 abstracts, with his work appearing in top medical journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, and JAMA. His research is frequently cited, and he was named a 2020-23 Clarivate Research Scholar for being among the top 1% of researchers globally. Additionally, he serves as a reviewer for prestigious journals including Gastroenterology and Gut.

As a principal investigator on numerous IBD studies, Dr. Panaccione plays a key role in evaluating new therapies for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. He is a founding member of the Crohn’s Colitis Canada PACE initiative and serves as the National IBD Lead on the CIHR SPOR IMAGINE grant. Dr. Panaccione is also a prominent figure in IBD education, having co-founded the Canada Future in IBD program and the Canadian GI Residents Course in IBD. His expertise has led to invitations to lecture worldwide, having delivered over 100 invited addresses in the past five years.
