Discovering Novel Treatments

Once a patient receives a Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis diagnosis, the next step is determining a course of treatment. With science rapidly advancing every day, Canadian researchers remain driven to discover novel forms of treatment.

With the support of grants from Crohn's and Colitis Canada, researchers are working on projects that focus on discovering innovative forms of treatment for patients living with Crohn's or colitis.

Research: A new therapeutic approach for Crohn’s disease

Amount: $375,000

Current Crohn’s disease treatments help many people, but they do not work well for everyone over the long term. This project looks at whether a bacterium called MAP may play a role in Crohn’s for some people. Researchers will test which antibiotic combinations can kill MAP and develop a way to detect MAP in bowel tissue samples. If successful, this work could help identify people who may benefit from future antibiotic treatment trials and move Crohn’s care toward a more targeted approach.
