Volunteer Grants

What are volunteer grants?

A volunteer grant is a donation made by your employer to a nonprofit organization based on the number of hours you volunteer. For example, some companies donate $10–$25 per hour, while others offer a lump sum after a certain number of hours, like $500 after 20 hours of service.

Check our employer volunteer grants tool below to see if your employer has a volunteer grants program.

How to apply for a volunteer grant

Check if your employer offers volunteer grants

Many companies offer volunteer grant programs but may not promote them widely. Check with your HR department or manager to see if they offer volunteer grants or other forms of workplace giving. If your company doesn't currently offer these programs, we have the resources to help you start the conversation and encourage your employer to create one.

Track your volunteer hours

Keep a detailed log of your volunteer activities. Include the date, number of hours, and a short description of what you did. This can be as simple as keeping a note on your phone or using a spreadsheet. Some employers may ask for specific proof or a signature from a staff member at Crohn’s and Colitis Canada to confirm your participation, so having a well-organized record will make the process faster and easier.

Tips for success

  • Start early: Some companies have deadlines for submitting volunteer grant applications, often within a few months of the volunteer activity.
  • Use available resources: If your company uses a CSR platform, familiarize yourself with the process and requirements.
  • Promote the opportunity: Encourage fellow volunteers to check their eligibility for volunteer grants. The more people who apply, the greater the support for Crohn’s and Colitis Canada.
  • Approved grants: If your employer has approved your volunteer grant, please ensure the grant donation is made out to our official name of Crohn's and Colitis Canada and indicate on the cheque that it is a volunteer grant donation.
