Dr. John K. Marshall (MD, MSc, FRCPC, CAGF, AGAF), Professor of Medicine, Director, Division of Gastroenterology, McMaster University

Dr. John K. Marshall is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Gastroenterology at McMaster University, as well as a consultant gastroenterologist at Hamilton Health Sciences. He completed his B.A. and M.D. at Queen’s University, followed by residency training and an M.Sc. in Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics at McMaster University. Dr. Marshall is a Full Member of the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute and has published over 300 academic papers and book chapters. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (JCAG), Associate Editor of ACP Journal Club, and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis. 

Dr. Marshall's clinical and research interests include inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome, gastrointestinal bleeding, endoscopy, clinical trials, clinical epidemiology, health outcomes, and health economics. He has been recognized with several honors, including the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG) Young Investigator Award in 2008, the CAG Young Educator Award in 2006, and the CAG Visiting Clinical Professorship in 2020. He is also a Fellow of both the American Gastroenterological Association (AGAF) and the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAGF). 

In 2024, Dr. Marshall was named Physician of the Year by Crohn’s and Colitis Canada for his commitment to personalized care for patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. He emphasizes compassion, patience, and empathy in his practice, ensuring that patients are actively involved in treatment decisions. Dr. Marshall is known for his dedication to patient care, often following up with patients outside clinic hours and advocating for increased research funding and awareness of IBD.
