No two Crohn’s or colitis cases are exactly alike, so there is no “one size fits all” approach to medication and treatment. The medications your doctor prescribes for you, the dosage and the effects you may experience are going to be unique to you. You and your physician must work together to sort out what is the most effective plan for you when you are in a flare-up or in remission. Medications used to manage Crohn's and colitis include antibiotics, sulfasalazine and 5-ASAs, immunosuppressants, steroids, biologics and biosimilars. When medications aren’t working for you, surgery may be recommended by your IBD specialist. Emerging treatments like Fecal Microbiota Therapy (FMT) may also offer the opportunity to participate in clinical trials under clinician care. In this section of the Journey you can explore all these treatment options for people with IBD. While Crohn’s and Colitis Canada provides information for your consideration, it is important for you to explore your options, and discuss the best course of treatment for you with your healthcare team.
